Migraines

"How to put an end to your Migraines- without invasive procedures, without waiting to see a neurologist and without medication!"

What to know about Migraines

What Is A Migraine?

A migraine is not a tumor, stroke, bleeding in the brain or infection. It is important to rule these things out if the migraine symptoms are not easily explained or fall outside of what a normal migraine experience would be.

Most people with migraines will experience a one sided severe pain often described as a throbbing sensation. Migraines are commonly seen to have pain with a combination of nausea, light or sound sensitivity, visual disturbances and even numbness in the extremities.

Migraines are currently managed through the means of avoiding triggers and preventative and/or abortive medications. The underlying cause of migraines is largely unknown, but we do know that migraines sufferers are 2-3x more likely to be female and family history is the strongest predictor.

Because there is still much to be discovered in the world of migraines it is important to do two things:

First - the most conservative treatments should always come first

Second - all sources of pain should be evaluated in order to guide the proper treatment

Why The Current Approach Fails

It is important to understand that there is significant overlap in the symptoms of a neck related headache and a migraine.

This means: it is very difficult to accurately diagnose a migraine

When a patient presents with a headaches or migraines the initial diagnosis will be based off of that patients symptoms. This means that in general there is no X-ray, MRI or CT-scan that is going to come back with any findings that explain your pain.

This can be a very frustrating process as many patients never find a straight answer as to where their pain is coming from.

The typical treatment approach involves a series of medications that promise to reduce the frequency or intensity of your pain. Many of these medications are costly and/or come with side-effects that make them unreasonable to use for extended periods of time.

Although many don't know they have a choice.

As I stated initially, there is a high level of confusion when attempting to making a proper diagnosis for headaches and migraines.

Believe it or not: headaches, dizziness, jaw pain, nausea, light/sound sensitivities and visual disturbances all come about because of restrictions in the neck.

How To Find More Lasting Relief

When I say restrictions in the neck, I am referring to loss of movement and for three joints in particular. The most important being C1-2. This is referring to the 1st and 2nd vertebrae (bones) in the top of the neck. This C1-2 joint is responsible for half of our rotation when we turn our head to the right or left. A restriction in C1-2 for someone with headaches or migraines is typically near complete loss of rotation through this joint. The joints above and below C1-2 are also important to assess, but most patients will have C1-2 as the main issue.

Novera will provide our patients with an evaluation that is specific enough to catch these restrictions. The majority of patients with headaches & migraines will go their entire lifetime without their neck properly assessed.

If this specific evaluation is missed, the patient could be missing out on an opportunity to restore proper mobility and treating their headaches and migraines with a non-invasive, non-medication and very effective approach.

Is It Like Going To The Chiropractor?

Dr. Taves is a Doctor of Physical Therapy. As a physical therapist he is trained in how to evaluate and restore movement problems.

As we discussed above, all of the symptoms of a migraine can be explained by loss of movement in specific joints in the neck.

There is actually a significant difference between chiropractic and physical therapy when it comes to treating migraines.

It is essential for anyone with headaches or migraines to be evaluated by a physical therapist that specializes in headaches because they are best equipped to evaluate and restore movement problems. In this case, evaluating the movement of each specific joint in the neck that may cause your pain is essential. Chiropractic care can be helpful, but the focus is primarily on alignment rather than movement.

Why Haven't I Heard of This Before?

Here is the truth: there are very few providers that evaluate how the neck is moving well enough to make the correct diagnosis or treat it effectively.

Medical Doctors are working from a pharmaceutical perspective.

Chiropractors are focused on alignment

Physical Therapists rarely have the confidence to treat this type of patient

At Novera, our average patient has suffered from 10+ years of migraines and seen neurologists, primary care doctors and chiropractors (even other PT's) without significant relief.

Those same patients are seeing improvement at our clinic within three weeks and within 6 weeks are getting back to life without migraines.
