Why The Conservative Approach Matters

In my studies of the body there are valiant attempts at making medicine as objective as possible, fixing anything and everything with the latest intervention. We spend countless man hours and dollars on finding the latest and greatest technology and newest medication. The bone is broken - so put a plate in and some screws. You have pain in your knee - take an ibuprofen. You have an infection - take an anti-biotic. Your back hurts - get an MRI and an injection. We become reliant on these things, thinking our bodies are hopelessly dependent on an outside intervention. Is this really the case? What if we took a step back and let the body heal itself. What if we spent that same amount of time an

Migraine Specialist Colorado Springs

Are you someone that struggles with headaches or migraines? If so, you're in the right place. Many times, a patient experiencing a headache or migraine will go down a somewhat hopeless road, trialing migraine medications and seeing multiple migraine specialists. Within the next several paragraphs my goal is to provide you with an alternative view and one that can provide hope to even the most severe migraine cases. First, let’s start with how a migraine diagnosis is typically made through traditional western medicine. There are many unknowns in the world of migraines as there is still confusion to what causes a migraine. Dr. Weil, an influential medical doctor, states “Migraines are severe,

Headaches & Altitude

Headaches occur commonly at an altitude of greater than 8,500 feet. Colorado Springs being at an altitude of 6,035 feet may fall short, but many in our city will say they notice a reduction in their symptoms when traveling to sea level. It is also not uncommon to find the local Colorado Springs residence traveling to 8,500 feet or above for a weekend of skiing or hiking. So what is the relationship between altitude and headaches? According to Dr. David Dodick who is an Associate Professor of Neurology, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, AZ a “headache may be a prominent symptom in people with chronic exposure to high altitude. In a study of 379 adult men who lived for more than ten years in Peru at an

The Overlap of Neck-Related Headaches & Migraines

“Cervicogenic headache may mimic those commonly associated with primary headache disorders such as tension-type headache or migraine and as a result, distinguishing among these headache types can be difficult.” - David M. Biondi, DO Why do I share this? Because this is an established Harvard professor of medicine who is getting at the relationship between the neck and headaches/migraines. Not only does he establish a relationship, but further advocates for a conservative approach to care, meaning physical therapy and hands on techniques to restore proper mobility in the neck. This is something that you won’t find on WebMD, but should be common practice. The quote above gives a snapshot of th

What's The Best Sleep Position?

Do you wake up with headaches when you sleep on your stomach? Here’s why: Headaches can be caused by tension in the neck. This limits the amount of rotation for the head and increases stress through the neck when the head is rotated. Stomach sleepers naturally sleep with their head rotated one direction. In this case, the tension that triggers their pain may increase. What are the alternative positions? Back sleeping is my first choice followed closely by side sleeping. Back sleepers typically allow for their cervical and lumbar spine to relax throughout the night, but I also find that this is the least common position to sleep in. If you choose the side sleeping option just know that it hel
