Many people who suffer from migraines have photophobia, which is a condition that is characterized by an abnormal and extreme sensitivity to light. Light can be a migraine trigger, and during migraine attacks light can cause dizziness, pain, and nausea. Photophobia often forces you to retreat to a dark room. In order to diminish the likelihood of suffering from photophobia, try avoiding certain lights and obtaining the right kind of lights in your living space.
Avoid fluorescent lights
Although it is often unnoticeable to the human eye, fluorescent lights flicker, and it is the flickering that triggers migraines. Fluorescent lighting is also a source of poor lighting. If you are relying on it for work, your eyes can be strained which triggers headaches. If possible, remove all fluorescent lighting from your office/home area and replace with desk lamps or softer overhead lighting.
Minimize time spent looking at computer screens
Computer lighting often triggers headaches. Take breaks from looking at your screen every 10 minutes. Stare at a distant object for 20 seconds, get up and walk around, or occupy yourself with a different task for a time. You can also change your screen frequency from 60 to 75 Hz. Consider adjusting the height of your computer. If you are straining your neck this could be the cause of your headaches.
Avoid overhead incandescent lighting
Oftentimes incandescent lighting is migraine-friendly, however overhead lighting of any type can be a migraine trigger. Consider re positioning your chair to avoid bad glare or covering the lights with opaque or frosted glass shades.
