Migraines and Vertigo

About 30-50% of those who suffer from migraines experience dizziness or spinning during their headaches or migraines. These symptoms can be a precursor to headaches, or they can become most severe during the middle of a migraine episode. The symptoms can last anywhere from a few seconds to several days.

These headaches are known as vertigo associated migraines.

Those who are afflicted with vertigo associated migraines compose about 1% of migraine sufferers. These types of migraines are coined vestibular migraine. Vestibular migraines have accompanying migraine symptoms in 50% of cases, but in the other 50%, often just vertigo occurs.

Vertigo can be triggered by a sudden movement of the head or a recurring movement of the head. In extreme cases, vertigo can be brought upon by watching other objects move. The cause of vertigo is not certain, but may be attributed to problems in the inner ear.

Vertigo will occur in a migraine aura. In an aura you can experience any of the following symptoms:

– ringing in the ear

– vision problems

– sound sensitivity

– dizziness

– tingling or numbness

Migraine auras are painful and disillusioning, but not life threatening. If you are experiencing an aura, dim the lights, lay down, and try to eliminate sounds in the area.
