Migraines in Adolescents

Many children who suffer from migraines have to skip school because of their pain. They end up missing school events and staying home, bedridden. The bright lights, loud sounds, and constant motion at school intensify their pain, making school an optimal place for triggering migraines.

Some adolescents who suffer from morning migraines have trouble focusing and paying attention throughout the day. These children often consider homeschool or part-time school to accommodate the number of missed days.

Like migraines in adults, adolescents experience similar symptoms. It is always prudent to take note if your child complains of any of the following symptoms:

  • abnormal sensitivity to light or sound
  • nausea
  • pain in neck, head, or face area
  • dehydration
  • stress or anxiety

Adolescents with migraines may suffer from insomnia or depression. Anxiety or personality disorder may also follow from headaches. This is why it is always a good idea to consult a physical therapist about your child’s headaches. His or her headaches may be the cause of multiple other health risks.
