Botox for Migraine Pain

Botox for Migraine Pain

Botox is a treatment approach that many think of as a ‘last resort’ for those with chronic migraine pain. Botox is a neurotoxic protein that is injected along the face, neck, and shoulders and works by disrupting nerve pathways that cause pain. These injections cause paralysis of the muscle, which is why its primarily use had long been as a preventative treatment for fine lines and wrinkles in the face. We are regularly asked about the benefits and downsides of Botox and whether or not it is a good option for treating migraine pain.

When considering Botox as a migraine preventative, we can’t help but be drawn to the fact that it is designed to target the musculoskeletal system. As manual therapists our providers work to address that exact system using hands-on techniques to restore mobility to the upper neck and shoulders – the very same areas that Botox is administered to. Botox treatments are typically administered every 12 weeks, or about every 3 months. Like other medication approaches, the treatment is designed to provide a temporary ‘shut off’ of the pain alarm that our body is receiving from what is likely dysfunction in the neck, jaw, or shoulders. Wouldn’t it make more sense to address the issues at the source so that our bodies weren’t sounding the alarm in the first place?

At Novera, we believe that the most conservative approach should always come first. This means taking the time to perform a thorough hands-on evaluation to check for restriction in the upper neck, tension in the jaw, or issues with posture. We utilize manual therapy techniques and specifically tailored home exercises and stretches to restore function to key areas that are sending pain to the head and face. We have found this to be a much more effective and long lasting method of treating migraines that does not involve painful injection cycles. If you are tired of searching for the source of your migraine pain and you’re ready to find a natural solution, reach out to our Director of Patient Experience and we will be happy to set up a consultation with one of our providers. Virtual evaluations and coaching packages are also available for those who are not able to make it to our office in person.
